Ideas for fonts, layouts and design for music magazine

Front Covers

I really like the font from this cover of 'pepper.mint' and I may try to incorperate it into my own magazine. I also like the type of images they are taking and it has given me some more ideas for my own magazine. The image above is the design I favour most out of the two and I will use their ideas on my magazine, although there are other aspects from the image below that I will include on my own magazine.

Contents Page

I really like the design of these two contents pages. The one on the left I really like how they have a landscape photo on the top of the page and then a list of contents with an image beside it and then also the same at the bottom but the image is on the other side. It also has the features and regualar sections, which I think I will include in my magazine. The other contents page on the right I like how they have a portrait of the women up the side of the page, and and also the big masthead at the top.

Article Page

The layout of this article is from Cosmopolitan. I like how they have made the image like a diary and I would like to use this for my own artilce. However for my article because the artist is new the little images will be a documentation of her before she became famous and then the biggest one will be the after documentation and the kind of life she leads now.

Overall I am using most of the layouts of these magazines to help me construct my own magazine. I think that by doing this it will help me make my own look like a professional magazine.

Ideas that will most likely go ahead:
The fonts I am most likely to use are Script MT Bold which will probably get used for the masthead and the '&' on the front cover. Vivaldi, which will most likely be for the subheadings and other texts. Mistral, which will be used for the main headlines.

MOJO Music Magazine

MOJO magazine is designed for those who truly love music, every month MOJO provides you with music’s greatest icons in exclusive encounters, while celebrating tomorrow’s stars today. A hand-compiled collector’s CD is free with every issue, while MOJO magazine’s definitive reviews section provides you with the ultimate buyer’s guide. All in all, MOJO adds up to the world’s finest music magazine.

The advertisements that appear on almost every page are CD albums there must be at least 30 pages that are covered in albums- new and old. An example of a new album would be Kings of Leon-Come Around Sundown and an older one being John Lennon-Power To The People. Another section of adverts is live bands playing at all different places, such as pubs/bars, festivals, arenas etc. There are also about 10 pages of more of these adevrts. There are adverts of a DVD that is the biography of a band or artist. Adverts that also appear in the magazine but very rarely is alcohol such as Jack Daniels and Havana Club. Also the only gadget that appears in the magazine is an application for the iPhone.

Cast, props, setting and location for music magazine

My cast will be a female that is the main icon from the band, there could also be shots of a male depending on how both their photoshoots will turn out.

For the first photoshoot the props that I will be using will be an acoustic guitar, aviator sunglasses, scarf, lots of bangles and clothing that is associated with the indie genre.
For the first setting it will be in a back garden that has lots of features such as, trees, statues, fountains and lots of flowers. The shot that I will be most likely using is medium shot or a medium/long shot.

For the second photoshoot the props I will be using are straw hat, acoustic guitar, headbands, flowers, and also again the assosciate clothing.
The second setting will either be in a field/meadow or woodland that will capture the aspect of being at a festival, which adds to idea of it being a music magazine etc.

Music Magazine Moodboard

For my moodboard the genre of the music I am doing is indie-rock and also alternative. The target audience for the magazine will be very fashion concious and will wear vintage and indie clothes. The female audience may even be inspired by vintage icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Marylin Monroe etc. Some of the possible stores and brands are, Topshop, converse, rayban, vintage and charity shops and places where they sell indie associated clothing. Gok Wan is passionate about fashion and links to this because he mixes and matches with clothes even with some vintage pieces and he can also represent those who are not straight. For the hobbies, my target audience will enjoy arts and photography and will perhaps take up a career in this area and jobs mainly in the media. The music they will listen to is partly a sub-culture however it is getting more popular, the indie-rock genre will include artists such as kings of leon, mumford&sons etc. and also some will even listen to records but this mainly is for the older people in my target audience. They will be a massive fan of festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading and V Festival. The radio stations they will mainly listen to is radio1 and xfm. They could also take an interest in acoustic guitar or actually play it themselves. The target audience may also like art and photography but this is probably more relevant for the female audience.
The target audience will probably have an old fashioned car such as a mini, beetle, or an american muscle car.
They may live in the country in a large house or a cottage or if they're job is based in the city they may have a house there, such as the people who have a job in the media etc.
Also they will go to a coffee shop such as Starbucks and Costa.
Demographic The average age for my magazine is 22 and it's targeted gender is probably around the same for both. Which means that the lifestyle subset is most likely to be yuppies.
The class for my magazine will be ABC1 (The A class will be appropriate if your a manager or professional in the media and keen on this genre of music).
Pyschographic is mainly suceeders although some could be aspirers- buying the magazine to achieve this lifestyle.

Institutional Data: Music Magazine

I have focused on two music magazines because the magazine that I am going to create is somewhere in the middle of them.

NME (New Musical Express)

NME is a popular music magazine in the United Kingdom, published weekly since March 1952. It was the first British paper to include a singles chart, in the 14 November 1952 edition. In the 1970s it became the best-selling British music magazine. During the period 1972 to 1976 it was particularly associated with gonzo journalism, then became closely associated with punk rock through the writing of Tony Parsons and Julie Burchill. It was initially published in a non-glossy tabloid format on standard newsprint.
NME has become a truly unique multi-platform media proposition. Across the magazine, nme.com, NMETV, NME Radio and the brand's live events and awards, NME reaches over one million music fans every week. NME is the longest published and most respected music weekly in the world. Every week it gives its readers the most exciting, most authoritative coverage of the very best in contemporary music, including award winning features, the latest releases, live reviews, the definitive guide to the best new bands in its Radar section, as well as a regular look back through the magazine's incredible 58 year heritage.
The magazine gets published every week for £2.20 which is a fairly high price for often it comes out. One of the reasons for this is because it is aimed at ABC1 classes.

The magazine also has a readership of 411,000 people and 73% of this is men, beacuse of this the magazine is targeted at men aged 17-30.

MOJO

Mojo is a popular music magazine published initially by Emap, and since January 2008 by Bauer, monthly in the United Kingdom. Following the success of the magazine Q, publishers Emap were looking for a title which would cater for the burgeoning interest in classic rock music. Mojo was first published on 15 October 1993; in keeping with its classic rock aesthetic, the first issue had Bob Dylan and John Lennon as its first cover stars. Noted for its in-depth coverage of both popular and cult acts it acted as the inspiration for Blender and Uncut. Many noted music critics have written for it including Charles Shaar Murray, Greil Marcus, Nick Kent and Jon Savage. The launch editor of Mojo was Paul Du Noyer and his successors have included Mat Snow, Paul Trynka and Pat Gilbert.Often criticised for its frequent coverage of classic rock acts such as The Beatles and Bob Dylan, it has nevertheless featured many newer and "left-field" acts. It was the first mainstream magazine in the UK to focus on The White Stripes, whom it has covered as zealously as many older acts.Mojo regularly includes a covermount CD which ties in with a current magazine article or theme. In 2004 it introduced the Mojo Honours list, an awards ceremony which is a mixture of readers' and critics' awards.
Discerning and passionate music aficionados, the MOJO audience is predominately male (72%) and affluent (36% AB). These heavy consumers of music see their passion as discovery without boundaries, genre and decade being secondary to quality. The magazine is published monthly for £4.50. The readership of MOJO magazine is around 106,367.

My Initial Ideas

My intial ideas for my music magazine was to do the 60's music and focus mainly on the 'hippy era'. So the magazine would have been based on music from the past such as, Bob Dylan and The Beatles etc. For my main image I would have a person preferably a woman dressed like a hippie, so I could get across the idea from the very first page. I would also include an acoustic guitar to add to the feeling of being a hippy.I wanted my magazine to be very unique and this is why I came up with the idea of having music from the past because its becoming rare. For the contents page I was going to make the layout look very different than most contents pages. However, I did want to go with the rainbow of colours that hippies like but I figured that it would look to busy and wouldn't look much like a magazine. The font was also going to be like the slanting, big, bold bubble writing that they use for most things.

My idea has changed slightly, I will still include hippy type music, but I want it to be more about indie/rock music because I know that it is listened to more nowadays.
